Allspars Final Fling 2024 report

After a busy afternoon afloat everyone returned back to their allocated launching sites and joined for evening food and drinks back in the Clubhouse. The competitors were also treated to a "Happy Hour" sponsored by Allspars Rigging.

Sunday morning followed very much the same as Saturday, with a much colder air and everyone wrapped up more compared to the previous day! Light winds prevailed and we got everyone afloat for an earlier start. The Race Committee was hindered by the continuous movement in wind direction with an oscillating building breeze from between 30 and 40 degrees at times, until the gradient settled as well as it could be expected to. This was made all the more challenging as the numerous shipping movements gave the race officer no option but to set the course close in to Jennycliff, and as the breeze was set from the East, patience was key in setting the fleet off on a decent upwind course to the first mark. After a short period under AP, the fleet got away.

The final race of the day was a round the cans race, which made the most of the entire Plymouth Sound National Marine Park. The fast class and Phantoms were sent around twice whilst the slow fleet were shortened to 1 round, and with expressions of considerable relief in knowing a hot shower to recover from the cold easterly was ever closer, the fleet made its way back to QAB Marina.

Once racing had completed on Sunday, all boats were recovered and everyone met back in the club for food and the overall prizegiving. Chris Arscott, Commodore, stated how great it was to see so many travel so far for such a great event which has transpired over the years since it first began. He also shared his thanks to all of the volunteers and to Andy Postle, MD of Allspars for his continued support over the years and his ambition to continue to build on this great event. Sam Hannaford, Event Director, followed by sharing his thanks, and showing his appreciation to the large volunteer base that support this event every year. We are truly grateful to the people who give their time and effort to ensure the Final Fling is a safe and successful event and our thanks go out to Horizons Plymouth, Plymouth University YC, Plymouth Youth Sailing, GOAT Marine and of course lead title sponsor Allspars Rigging.

Leading into 2025 and in preparation for the 9th year, we will be looking at adopting a new format to the Regatta. Working alongside other clubs in the Port Of Plymouth, the aim will be to involve more local clubs and remove conflict of overlapping events. We aim to make a mark on calendars for other classes and racers up and down the country with the ambition of continuous growth for the Final Fling to become to the largest annual event in the area.

Winners in Each Class:

Sunday saw a significant drop in wind and directional change which started in the North, veering to eventually settle in the East. Both fleets ventured further into Plymouth Sound to lessen any land effects. Conditions were tough for crews and race officers alike with 10–15-degree oscillations but patience and local knowledge prevailed, and the top-level racing enjoyed from the previous day continued. With three more races in the bag the fleet had completed a great weekend racing. Once packed and changed, retreated to the RWYC for food, drink and the overall prize giving.

Royal Western Yacht Club Commodore, Chris Arscott expressed his thanks to the competitors for travelling from all over the country to support the Allspars Final Fling, which is now seen as a key fixture in so many dinghy sailor’s calendar. Allspars Final Fling event director for the second year running, Sam Hannaford, added his thanks to everyone who has continued to sponsor and support the event throughout the years, not least Allspars as title sponsor and the Clubs landlords, MDL for their support in providing the excellent facilities.

Sam closed the event by adding, “The Allspars Final Fling goes from strength to strength and could not be continued without not only the support from the competitors, but its sponsors and volunteer base who all pull together to provide a safe, fun regatta both ashore and afloat. A special thank you to Allspars, Horizons Plymouth, Queen Anne’s Battery Marina and Plymouth University Sailing sector for all their efforts and support."

Commodore, Chris Arscott finally commented, “Since the successful completion of the Allspars Final Fling regatta we are very pleased to say that 2 classes have so far expressed an interest in running their National Championships.”

With a proven formula, a spectacular setting and great race management, the Allspars Final Fling will feature once again in Plymouth Sound National Marine Park on the 12th and 13th October 2024.

October 12th and 13th saw the Royal Western Yacht Club host the annual Allspars Final Fling Dinghy Regatta, now in it's 8th year the Club welcomed 45 boats from surrounding clubs in the port and across the country to Plymouth for two days of competitive racing.

With an unfriendly weather forecast in the weeks leading up to the event, we saw a lower number of entries compared to 2023. This was coupled with the unsettling last minute Notice To Mariners from KHM on the Thursday evening that they had intention to close the Port Of Plymouth on Saturday between 1000 and 1500 hours due to a nuclear submarine movement. The Regatta Directors were quick to meet on the Friday morning to discuss options for the weekend ahead. Fortunately, the powers to be cancelled the NTM which allowed everyone to breathe again.

Saturday morning brought low winds and a cold air whilst dinghies were being prepared for racing, thankfully the Club had coffee and bacon sandwiches on offer to warm the hearts before a Competitor Briefing which was held at 1100. Everyone followed afloat shortly after, and after a short AP racing began in the Sound. Windward Leeward courses were the call of the day and with a gradient North Westerly the windward mark was set just to the east of the Bridges. The strength increased as the day progressed and by the 3rd race we were seeing tricky gusts in excess of 20 knots, catching a number of the crews out giving them an early bath.
