RYA POWERBOAT COURSES
RYA Powerboat Level 1
This course is an introduction to boating techniques for launching and recovering a boat from a road trailer, everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment. It can either be taken as a stand-alone course or integrated into the two-day Level course.
RYA Powerboat Level 2
This two-day course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence.
RYA Powerboat Intermediate
This course covers the practical use of pilotage and passage planning by day on coastal waters using both traditional and electronic navigational techniques. During the two days you also cover more advanced boat handling. It is recommended for anyone considering moving on to the Advanced course.
RYA Powerboat Advanced
This course is for leisure and professional boaters wanting to undertake more adventurous trips. It includes navigation by day and night, weather and other aspects of skippering a small boat on more challenging passages in coastal waters.
RYA Powerboat Instructor
The Powerboat Instructor is a competent, experienced powerboater who has been trained to teach powerboating up to Level 2 under the supervision of the Principal or Chief Instructor of a recognised centre.
RYA Powerboat Advanced Instructor
Existing powerboat instructors wishing to teach the advanced course must hold that level of certificate themselves, gained either by taking the two day course or the direct entry examination.
RYA DINGHY COURSES
RYA Adult Beginners’ Courses
The scheme is a series of two-day courses for adults wanting to learn in dinghies, small keelboats and multihulls. It has been designed to help you enjoy whichever aspect of the sport appeals to you.
RYA Youth Beginners’ Courses
The certificates within our Youth Sailing Scheme are a significant achievement. Instructors sign off each skill as you complete it and, once completed, your certificate can be of use in other areas of your study or activities such as PE at school, or the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. The RYA runs a programme called Onboard, which enables children to start sailing and windsurfing through their school’s PE activities.
RYA Improvers’ and Advanced Courses
Following on from the early courses in both the National Sailing Scheme and the Youth Sailing Scheme, you can choose one of our five advanced modules to suit your sailing interests. These are available to both adults and young people. Generally, you will be ready for these courses if you have completed Level 2 or 3 of the National Sailing Scheme, or Stage 3 or 4 of the Youth Sailing Scheme, and have had some practice too.
