Start of 11th Shetland RB&I Race
The eleventh edition of the Shetland Round Britain and Ireland Race got underway on Sunday. The forty boats which had gathered in
the Queen Anne Battery Marina over previous days, the for last minute preparations and celebrations ceased and they eased out into
Plymouth Sound with varying degrees of urgency heading for the start line.

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston launches Shetland Round Britain & Ireland Race at the London Boat Show The distinguished and challenging Shetland Round Britain and Ireland Race, hosted every four years by the Royal Western Yacht Club, is one of the most demanding courses for any yachtsman and, the next edition of the race for yachts and multi-hulls between 30 - 50 feet sets sail this year.
The RWYC is delighted that one of the races veteran entrants Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, who has competed on six occasions and won twice, not only officially launched this year’s race at the London Boat but has also generously agreed to be the official race starter firing his own replica cannon to get the entrants underway from Plymouth Sound on the 11th June.

Honeymoon for Round Britain Racers
There are some races that seem to bring out the best in people. The Shetland Round Britain and Ireland, raced mainly by amateurs, is one of them. Even if it is ostensibly a fiercely contested race, it’s underlying atmosphere is a friendly affair and this year, for one couple especially, it will hopefully live up to it’s affable reputation as Bob Beggs and Carole Newman have selected the race as their honeymoon.

The distinguished and challenging Round Britain and Ireland Race, hosted every four years by the Royal Western Yacht Club, is one of the most demanding courses for any yachtsman. And, the next edition of the race for yachts and multi-hulls between 30 – 50 feet is due to start next year on 11th June which may seem a long way off but, with preparations and qualifying cruises to be completed the seemingly distant date will come around all too quickly.
