The Pursuit is a unique sailing event and is equally welcoming to those who race and those who have never raced. It encompasses all types of yachts: 20 footers, ocean cruisers, out and out racers and everything in-between. All are welcome, provided they can safely sail offshore (see conditions of entry).
Individual Event - £10,000 prize money
Provided by the Eleanor Creeke Charitable Settlement.
First Prize £1,000 Cash Prizes go down to 50th place!
Team Event - £2,000 prize money
First Prize £1,250
Any 3 boats sailing for the same charity can enter to “Sail as a
Team” provided each boat has £50 of sponsorship i.e. total
£150. Where three boats individually support the same
Charity, they will be placed in a team (provided each has at
least £50 sponsorship).
Climb the Prize Ladder by
raising sponsorship
Every £25 of sponsorship (to a max of £500) buys one point
which, combined with the boat’s sailed position, lifts it one
place up the Prize Ladder. (Maximum lift 20 places). In the case
of a tie, sponsorship decides!
£500 Prize for the most sponsorship
Sponsorship forms can be downloaded through the RWYC
web site. Each entrant must declare their final sponsorship
figure to the event admin. Final sponsorship figure to the
event admin by noon on Wednesday 16th July - this is
the final cut off date for sponsorship declaration.
What is the Pursuit?
It is an offshore event for individual yachts and 3-boat teams
(the latter are automatically included in the individual event
so there is a possibility of more than one prize!) The event’s
purpose is to raise money for charities which “benefit the
human condition” and all prize money won goes to a boat’s
nominated charity.
Boats normally finish by 15:30 hours and all crews are
welcomed afterwards to the RWYC for supper and the prize
giving. Space permitting, there may be temporary berthing
courtesy QAB Marina (contact the Berthing Master).
EVENT ENTRY FEE £12 if received before 7th July thereafter
£15
Absolute cut off date for entry - 12 noon 16th July and
no late entries will be accepted.
The Course
The simplicity of the course reflects the diversity of the fleet.
From a start in Plymouth Sound, out to the Hand Deeps Buoy
(approx 3 miles west of the Eddystone) and back to the finish
at the RWYC line - approx. 26 miles - it is sailing’s equivalent
of a marathon!
There is no massed start, instead, start times are allocated
based on handicap. Boats are handicapped by the Event’s
Handicapper using Portsmouth Yardstick. Sailing Instructions
will be available through the RWYC web site a week prior to
the Pursuit or can be collected from the Club.
The Pursuit welcomes sailors of all abilities and all ages.
Participation is what counts
Saturday 19th July is a great opportunity for everyone to enjoy
themselves. May the result be another wonderful boost to
charity funds.
