Squib Nationals

25/06/11 – 01/07/11

The Royal Western Yacht Club is very proud to have been chosen to host the Squib Class National Championship.

This year’s 2011 Squib Nationals culminated in a final days racing where any of the top 6 boats were in with a shout of winning the event.  As with all the races it was started under Black Flag, so no change there, and it was the Hogan’s in Rico’shea  136 from South Caernarvonshire YC who secured 1st place followed by a very happy and smiling Class Chairman Jenny Riley and her husband Brian in Brimstone 73, their best result of the week.

There was no stopping the Hogan’s though and this was their 3rd win of the week and becoming the overall championship winners for 2011.  Only  3 points separated the next 5 boats which were,  Harry II skippered by Mike Budd who was second,  followed by Nimbus, Alan Johnson,  then Dave Best with Crossfire, Micky Wright with Spoof  and finally Malcolm Hutchings in Lady Penelope. This shows how competitive the racing had been all week.    It doesn’t take a genius to work out that South Caernarvonshire YC won the team prize with the top 4 boats hailing from there.

Throughout the week the Squibbers were blessed with fantastic sailing conditions and with the exception of Monday which was abandoned due to lack of wind, all races were completed in brilliant sunshine coupled with medium to fresh breezes, a real showcase for Plymouth and Devon.  As mentioned during the prizegiving dinner the Squibbers had for once met their match in PRO Mike Pearson and his race team who wouldn’t be persuaded to give anything but perfect starts and courses.   Squibbers have departed from the RWYC leaving a lasting legacy of what a friendly and social group of sailors the Squib Assoc are and our heartfelt thanks and gratitude from the RWYC goes to all competitors wherever they sail.

Next year Squibbers meet again at the Royal Dart YC for their 2012 Nationals where we are sure they will be warmly welcomed.
