Shetland RB&I starts today at 1200 for the multihulls and 1215 for the monohulls.
Spectators are requested to use the spectator areas and keep clear of the start area between 1030 and 1230 ( Plymouth Local Notice to Mariners 19/06).

Shetland hosts reception for RB&I competitors
The Convenor and members of the council, officials of VisitShetland sponsor of the Shetland Round Britain & Ireland Race 2006, and the Commodore of the Lerwick Boating Club met the competitors at the Shetland Reception on Friday night.
The Shetland food, drink and music was much appreciated by competitors and club members.

Competitors gather in Plymouth ready for the start of the Shetland RB&I.
40 boats have now arrived and their crews are preparing for Sunday's start of the 11th running of the Shetland Round Britain & Ireland Race.

Doolally Tap drops out
Doolally Tap has not completed its preparations amd has been withdrawn.

White Spirit and Sonic Boom withdraw from the Shetland RB&I.
Simon Brady has been forced to withdraw Sonic Boom because of unexpected work commitments for his co-skipper.
Hannah White has been unable to ready White Spirit for the qualifier..

Doolally Tap damaged.
Yet another competitor has suffered damage before the start of the race.
Doolally Tap has badly damaged one of her floats in an altercation with a racing mark in the Solent. The float is back for repair and the qualifying cruise will now be completed in May.

HMS Bangor to be Start Vessel for Shetland RB&I.

HMS Bangor, under the command of Lieutenant Commander Jon Holmes Royal Navy, will be the Start Vessel for the Shetland Round Britain & Ireland Race 2006.
HMS Bangor is the ninth of the Sandown class of minehunters and was built by Vosper Thorneycroft in 1999

Iroquois damaged in collision.
Iroquois was hit by a French fishing boat in mid-Channel. They expect to have the damage repaired soon and complete their qualifier on time.

Cheetah of Plymouth dismasted.
Cheetah of Plymouth lost her rig, through what is believed to have been a fitting failure, on a return trip from Santander. Carole Newman and Bob Beggs have been given an extension for their qualifying cruise while they obtain a new mast.
Meanwhile over half the entries have completed their cruise with just under two weeks to go!
One that has yet to qualify is Pete Goss and Paul Larsen with Pete still shaking the snow and ice off his boots following his successful trek to the North Pole!

44 yachts entered for the Shetland Round Britain & Ireland
With just days to go before entries close for this year's RB&I the entry list stands at 12 multihulls and 32 monohulls. The monohulls consist of 5 Open 40s and 27 IRC yachts provisionally split into 5 Class 1, 13 Class 2 and 9 in Class 3.

Another OSTAR competitor enters the Shetland RB&I.
Leon Bart has teamed up with Richard Versteegh to enter his 37' trimaran HOUD VAN HOUT. Leon says he enjoyed last year's OSTAR, in which he took first place in class, so much he had to come again for this year's RB&I!

Westcountry sailor and adventurer Pete Goss is to return to competitive sailing with an entry in the 2006 Shetland Round Britain and Ireland Yacht Race. Pete and team mate Paul Larsen will be entering this unique two-handed sailing challenge in a small, lightweight trimaran that they hope will take the sailing world by storm - the Seacart 30.

Familiar names and faces!
Several well known boats and crews have entered this year's Shetland RB&I. At the last count there were 15 past OSTAR competitors and 21 past RB&I competitors with some having competed in more than one of each race!
Among the repeat performers are Nico Budel and Hannah White from last year's OSTAR, seasoned OSTAR and RB&I competitors Harry Vogel and Jerry Freeman, Carole Newman and Bob Beggs, and Wolfies Toy back again with a new crew.
The RWYC is well represented too, with at least seven yachts carrying Club members.

44 yachts entered for the Shetland Round Britain & Ireland Race 2006.
At the close of the normal entry period there were 44 confirmed entries - 34 monohulls and 10 multihulls. Some yachts and crews still have to complete their qualifying cruise so there may be further changes before the late entry and qualifying closure date of 1 May.

Honeymoon for Round Britain Racers

There are some races that seem to bring out the best in people. The Shetland Round Britain and Ireland, raced mainly by amateurs, is one of them. Even if it is ostensibly a fiercely contested race, it's underlying atmosphere is a friendly affair and this year, for one couple especially, it will hopefully live up to it's affable reputation as Bob Beggs and Carole Newman have selected the race as their honeymoon.
