Races within a race
As the winds increase to give better sailing off the west coast of Ireland there are some interesting "races within a race" developing.
Two J109s, Zelda (Michael Ewart-Smith and Ben Richards) and Red Arrow (Marcus Wilson/Richard Steel) battle it out for the lead in Class 2. ChillOut, the third J109, was over 5 hrs behind these two before her retirement.
Off the North-West of Ireland three Open Forty Class boats, Immo BIB (Roaring Forty) with Michel Kleinjans and Irishman Mick Liddy, Roaring Again (Hans Plas and Robin Verhoef) and La Promesse (under the hands of Jankees Lampe and Bart Boosman) contest for the lead of Class 0. La Promesse has taken the offshore route in search of better winds, but with the change of course to the north east this may not have paid off. Hans will be watching Immo BIB closely since he expects Roaring Again to outperform his old boat!
Now closing on their next objective, Castlebay in Barra, we find the greyhounds of the sea, Trimarans Waverider and Kenmore changing places regularly on their dash northwards to the second finish. Waverider (previously Mollymawk) is driven by Plymouth sailors Nigel Passmore and Angus Mc Phie who admit they have little multihull experience but are rapidly becoming converts, Kenmore (previously Meridian) is in the hands of Nick Bubb and Pete Cumming who have youth on their side.
Rex Conn and Etienne Giroire in Alacrity should still be ahead of these two, but since they do not have a tracker they sail on in secret.
