Shetland Round Britain
& Ireland Race 2006

Kinsale noon Tuesday 13th June

This has been a slow race so far with fourteen boats of the forty strong fleet now in Kinsale.

One exception was the amazingly quick arrival of Pete Goss and Paul Larsen sailing 'Cornwall Playing for Success' which crossed the finish line at 11:00 am on Monday with an elapsed time of 23 hours. They took full advantage of the light fickle winds along the south Cornwall coast and, when in a calm off the Lizard, "rowed" into a better position in Mounts Bay to catch a new breeze which took them easily to the Bishop Rock. After that it was a sleigh ride in freshning wsw'ly winds all the way to the Old Head of Kinsale and the finish line.

The remaining multihulls of the fast class enjoyed their power-reach across the Celtic Sea during Monday, and all slipped into Kinsale in the late afternoon and evening. Alacrity from the USA, sailed by Rex Conn and Etiene Giroire, just lead Waverider and Kenmore while Paradox just made it a dusk as the wind fell away.

During the small hours of the morning we saw the first of the Open Forties finishing in a tight group having held the wind at sea almost to the line. Michel Kleinjans and Mick Liddy were first sailing Immo BIB (Roaring Forty) just leading Hans Plas and Robin Verhoef in Roaring Again - a tough one for Hans as he was the previous owner of Roaring Forty. JanKees Lampe and Bart Boosman with La Promesse completed the group.

After this dark hour activity, Kinsale Harbour fell into a glass calm and there was little wind along the coast either. Gradually yachts crept to the finishg, and so it continues. The order of the morning finishers being Zelda, Hooligan V, Hayai, Red Arrow, Vijaya, and Cheetah of Plymouth.

The remainder of the fleet is still strung out across the Celtic Sea and we do not expect to see them until late this evening.
