TUSITALA
|
TUSITALA is a Sadler 290, a new Stephen Jones design (best described as a mini Starlight) hull no. 10 launched September 2005. TUSITALA and I were at the Southampton Boat Show 2005 where 18 Sadler 290's were sold by the builders Rampart Yachts Ltd. Sails are by Doyle at Southampton who have helped with much advice. This boat is a cracking all rounder and at 29'2" LOA. 4'3" Draft, Displacement 5300 kg and with bilge keels it will be interesting to see how we fare with the strong competition.

Jon Coleman - Skipper
Jon (43). My father took me sailing when I was in a carrycot. I made my first channel crossing with him at 7 years old. At 18 I made my first channel crossing as skipper in my father’s Hurley 22, with a dinghy sailor and two novices as crew. My wife and I have made several channel crossings in my first boat, a 26'6" wooden Atlefolk (similar to a SCOD). We got married on Alderney in 1991 hence the sail no. GBR91R.
I have been sailing all my life but have never raced as skipper nor taken on any sailing of this scale. I am confident in Simon and TUSITALA and am relishing the sailing and navigational challenge.
Simon Ellyatt - Co-Skipper
For Simon, the attraction of the race is the challenge; he has sailed and owned boats all his life, first on the East coast then in the South West. A particularly gruelling yacht delivery from Stockholm to England one November first gave him the bug for this sort of sailing; one of the perks of owning a boatyard is delivering yachts for customers and he has brought boats back from the Mediterranean a few times. A more recent sailing interest of Simon's is Hobie Cat racing in Cornwall. Simon has competed in cross-channel racing and is a member of various local yacht clubs (Royal Dart, Royal Torbay, Paignton, Stoke Gabriel Boating Assn.) where he races regularly and it was in the late 1990's when the Royal Dart were hosting, that Simon won the GK24 European Championships, racing round the cans.
