Shetland Round Britain
& Ireland Race 2006

HOOLIGAN V

Hooligan V is a Max Fun 35 designed by Simonis and Voogd. The yacht is based on a sports boat design with half the weight in its torpedo keel. Normally it requires a crew of 8 offshore to race.
Ed's comment is "We have sailed Hooligan V in a fair amount of bad weather, including the qualifying race organised by the Royal Southampton Yacht Club from the Solent to the Falmouth Black Rock Buoy and back. We are hopeful that we will put in a good performance, in the race, but it will be tough. Hooligan V is a very quick 35 footer, but not necessarily the most comfortable yacht that will be entering. Be that as it may, we are both hopeful that it will live up to its reputation and give us Max Fun on this arduous race."
The yacht's specification is:-
Length overall - 10.64 metres, Waterline length - 9.85 metres, Beam - 3.24 metres, Weight - 3.813 KG, IRC rating - 1.1

Ed Broadway - Skipper
Ian White - Co-Skipper

Ed and Ian first met on the Helford River to Morgat race in 1974, and this became the beginning of a long standing friendship which has involved both cruising in the early days and thereafter a serious commitment to ocean racing.
They crewed on a number of yachts in the 70's varying size from the 73 feet Maxi Ketch Black Fin to a Ron Holland half tonner Golden Thistle.
Both Ed and Ian were attracted to smaller boats, and bought a Trapper 950 "Hooligan" in 1982. This boat was campaigned very successfully in RORC and JOG until 1987.
Previous commitments kept both of them out of sailing during the early 90's, until Ed bought Hooligan IV, a JOD 35 in 1997. This boat was successfully campaigned in both JOG and RORC and was replaced in 2002 by the present Hooligan V.
