Carole Newman - Skipper
Bob Beggs - Co-Skipper

Bob Beggs and Carole Newman will be racing off at the start of their honeymoon in the Shetland Round Britain and Ireland Race. Nearly ten years to the day since Bob proposed in Newport Rhode Island at the finish of the Single-handed Transatlantic Race for which the couple had just competed - in separate yachts of course. Bob arrived ten days before Carole in his Dazcat 26 having made repairs on-route with a smashed rudder on the first day! Carole meanwhile arrived with news of her own, having spent the last 32 days battling morning sickness and the tail end of Hurricane Bertha, neither of which she knew about before leaving!
And the last ten years as they say is history. The couple started the Performance Yachting Sail and Power School at the Mayflower Marina in Plymouth. In March 2004 the couple had there second child Rachel who is excelling at the title "the terrible twos" while Rebecca who was the cause of all mums problems in the 1996 Transat has followed in the family tradition at the age of nine and has taken to dinghy sailing.
Together with being the Principal and instructor for the school, Bob is also an RYA examiner. Between juggling the demands of the school, Bob has managed to fit in his second Round Britain and Ireland race, three Fastnets and became the winning skipper to the 'Times Clipper Round the World Yacht Race' in 2001, a fully crewed race run by Sir Robin Knox Johnson. All those achievable because he was able to leave Carole at the helm of the school. Carole, herself, has notched up three Atlantic crossings and a six hundred mile single-handed passage in the famous Folk boat Jester.
Although this will be Bob's third RBI, the idea of participating as a couple in this race had been on the cards for some years, and now they are able to fulfil this challenge with style, getting married at the Plymouth Registry Office the day before the race, with the wedding reception at the Royal Western Yacht Club that evening. Competitors in the race will mingle with the wedding party as they dance to live music into the early hours, before the reality of what lays ahead really sinks in, the race, not married life that is?
