The racing will be organised by the Royal Western Yacht Club with a variety of sailing courses between the sound and the river Tamar. It will be possible to view the boats racing from Barnpool in Mount Edgecumbe and from Cremyll Quay. Classic keelboats from the British Classic Yacht Club will compete in the event with a PY handicap. It is an open championship, so there will also be international yachts in the race. “The French A22 “Just Rayonna”, the biggest Harry Becker design ever (LOA 12.38mt) will sail across the Channel “, says Barbara Bridgman at Cremyll Keelboats, the organizer of the championships. ”We also hope to welcome the beautiful Arvid Laurin design “Mary Lou” and her enthusiastic Swedish-Swiss crew, Barbara continues. She adds that ”from Sweden professional crews will fly over to show us how to do it…” In 2010 the famous British 22 sq m Vigilant and Patriot took part in the Swedish championships at Trosa.
These elegant boats reminding us of another era will be moored in the magnificent surroundings of theRoyal William Yard for all to admire. Just imagine these 22 square metres and other classic keelboats of great pedigree dancing on the water of the Hamoaze, where the British navy thrived in its haydays. Finally Plymouth’s waterfront can rejoice in the best spirit of maritime tradition.
